Mississauga, ON – The Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors have selected two players in the first round of today’s CHL Import Draft. With the 14th overall selection, the Majors chose Mika Partanen from Finland and with the 17th overall pick; they took Maxim Kitsyn from Russia. The 14th selection was acquired in a trade with Sudbury and the 17th selection was acquired in a trade yesterday with Saginaw.
Partanen, 17, is a left winger who spent last season with the HIFK U20 team. He is a strong power forward who stands 6’2” tall and weighs in at 190 pounds. This past season he appeared in 38 games with the HIFT U20 team where he had 15 goals and 24 assists for 39 points. He also played at the international level with Finland’s Under-18 team. He appeared in 6 games, contributing with 1 goal and 3 assists for 4 points and helped Finland to a bronze medal victory.
Kitsyn, 18, is also a left winger. He was recently selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the sixth round of the NHL Entry Draft. Last season, he split time between the KHL and MHL in Russia. He totaled 20 points in 32 games combined. He also played for Russia at the 2010 World Junior Hockey Championships. He played in 6 games in the tournament and recorded 3 assists.
