Mississauga, ON – The 2010 NHL Entry Draft was completed today at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, California. It was an exciting day for three Majors players who were picked up by NHL clubs. Devante Smith-Pelly was the first to go when the Anaheim Ducks scooped him up in the second round with the 42nd overall selection. Rob Flick was the next Major to go. Not ranked by NHL Central Scouting, Flick was picked up by the Stanley Cup Champions, the Chicago Blackhawks with their fourth round selection. Greg Sutch was the final Major to go when he was picked up in the fifth round by the Buffalo Sabres.
Smith-Pelly, 18, is a native of Toronto, ON. He had a breakout season with the Majors scoring 62 points. That was good enough to lead the team (along with Casey Cizikas). He was also second on the team in goals and was the only Major to average more then 1 point per game. He was named an Eastern Conference All Star and chipped in with a goal and an assist. He also appeared in the Home Hardware Top Prospects game.
Flick, 19, is a native of London, ON. He also enjoyed the best year of his young career during the 2009-10 season. Flick appeared in 65 games and tallied 34 points. He brought a lot of toughness to the Majors as shown by his 157 penalty minutes.
Sutch, 18, is a native of Newmarket, ON. He was a first round pick of the Sarnia Sting in the 2008 OHL Priority Selection. He joined the Majors through a trade last summer that saw the Majors send Kale Kerbashian, Kyle Neuber and three draft picks to the Sting to get him. Sutch battled through various injuries in his first season with Mississauga but was a solid contributor in the 43 games he appeared in. When healthy in the post season, Sutch gave fans a glimpse of his offensive potential with 5 points.
