MAJORS RESPOND WITH BIG WIN
Sunday February 28, 2010
Mississauga, ON- The Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors bounced back with a convincing 7-4 victory today over the Oshawa Generals. The win improves the Majors to 39-17-4-2 on the season.
After being shutout on home ice by the Brampton Battalion on Friday night the Majors came out stronger and earned the two points. Oshawa did grab the lead just over eight minutes into the game from Tyler Taylor after a Majors turnover. The Majors drew even at 14:16 after a goal from Ryan Lopes to make it 1-1. Jordan Mayer broke down the centre of the ice and passed across to Lopes, who beat Michael Zador top corner. The Majors Power Play unit scored their first of three goals on the afternoon at 17:31 to make it 2-1. Rob Flick’s quick snap shot beat Zador low blocker side to give the Majors the lead into the first intermission.
Twenty-eight seconds into the second period David Corrente made it a 3-1 lead for the Majors. Corrente’s blast from the point hit off the post and in for the Majors second power play goal in the game. Devante Smith-Pelly made it a three goal advantage just over three minutes later after he carried the puck into the slot and beat Zador with a backhanded shot. Generals Coach Chris Di Piero then called a timeout to get his team calm and back into the game. It seemed to work as Oshawa’s play improved and at 9:03 they scored a power play goal of their own courtesy of Tony DeHart. The Majors then pulled JP Anderson from the net for a couple minutes and put Chris Carrozzi in. The two would again switch places as Anderson returned to the game. During that time the Majors effectively killed off a Generals power play attempt. Casey Cizikas blocked two shots as the Majors were successful in killing off the advantage. Oshawa grabbed their third goal of the game with just over five minutes to play in the second from Jeff Brown. Jeff Hayes initial shot hit off a Majors defender and deflected onto the stick of Brown who put away the easy tap-in to make it 4-3 Mississauga after two.
The Majors began their shutdown of the Generals and limited them to few scoring chances early in the period. Blake Parlett scored the Majors third power play goal of the game at 8:58 of the final period to make it 5-3. Ryan Lopes scored his second of the night after stealing the puck off an Oshawa defender and beating Zador five-hole to make it 6-3 for the Majors. The Majors continued their strong play and added a seventh goal courtesy of Kelly Geoffrey at 16:20. Alain Berger scored late for Oshawa but it would be too little too late for the Generals, making the final 7-4 for Mississauga. JP Anderson and Chris Carrozzi combined for 18 saves for the Majors. Anderson takes the victory. Michael Zador stopped 24 of 31 shots and takes the loss for Oshawa. The Majors will be back in action on Friday March 5 when they look for revenge on the Brampton Battalion at the Hershey Centre at 7:30 p.m. The Majors then travel to Peterborough to meet the Petes, Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. The Double Blue will return home to close the weekend for an afternoon contest with the Sudbury Wolves at 2:00 p.m. To purchase tickets or for more information contact the Majors office at (905) 502-7788 x.1.
