Majors Fend Off the Attack

Mississauga, ON – The Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors won their sixth straight home game this evening, overpowering the Owen Sound Attack by a 5-3 count.  Casey Cizikas led with way with 2 goals, helping the Majors improve their record to 17-13-1-0 on the year.

Cizikas opened up the scoring for the home squad at 16:43 of the 1st period with a shorthanded, breakaway goal.  The lone assist went to Cameron Gaunce.

Things heated up in the 2nd period when Matt Caria wired a shot home at 3:12, off of Gaunce and Mike Pelech support, to give the Majors a 2-0 lead.  Unfortunately, Owen Sound’s Matt Carter and Marcus Carroll collected quick goals at 7:44 (power-play) and 8:17, respectively, to tie it up.

However, the Majors jumped back in front at 14:07 when Jesse Messier connected off of Caria and Kris Sparre passes.  Then, Cizikas grabbed a goal at 15:26 after accepting passes from Mike McGurk and Brett Flemming to put the Majors in front by a pair once again.  Unfortunately, Attack player Chris MacKinnon cut the lead in half at 16:44 to round out a wild period.

Mississauga did a good job shutting down the Owen Sound offence in the 3rd period.  They were rewarded for their effort when Matt Piva tallied the insurance goal at 12:50, with the lone assist going to Sparre.

Chris Carrozzi got the start in net for the Majors and made 30 saves while Tyler Beskorowany blocked 28 shots for the Attack.  The Majors were 1 for 4 on the power-play while Owen Sound went 1 for 5.  The game’s three stars were Cizikas (1st), Messier (2nd) and Gaunce (3rd).
