The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) is comprised of twenty member clubs and players age 16 to 21. OHL players are either drafted into the league or signed as free agents. Unless they reside locally, the players will spend the year living with billet families in the city in which they play.
The teams supply the players with all of their equipment and travel needs, as well as a monthly allowance. And, each club employs a full-time trainer, equipment manager and, of course, coaches.
Players also receive an education package for each year that they play in the OHL. While they’re in the league, their schooling is monitored by an education consultant. Furthermore, the league hands out multiple academic awards at the end of each season and the Majors disperse a similar award each month during the campaign.
Players spend the season competing through an intense 68-game schedule that starts in September and concludes in March. The OHL playoffs run through April and May. Then, the team that is crowned OHL champion at the end of this period goes on to play in a four-team tournament for the Canadian Hockey League (CHL)'s Memorial Cup.
