The Present Honours the Past

Dick Duff (12) and Ted Lindsay (5) were among three players numbers retired during the 2011 Mastercard Memorial Cup

Sometimes a player changes his jersey number in hopes of changing his luck.

Sometimes a player changes it because a new teammate has already laid claim.

But sometimes a player changes it to pay respect to the legacy of a player who came before him.

If fans of Stuart Percy or Jamie Wise wonder why their numbers have changed this season, the latter says it all. Percy's former number 5 also belonged to Ted Lindsay; Wise's number 12 to Dick Duff, and after ceremonies during the 2011 Mastercard Memorial Cup, Percy and Wise became the last players to wear their respective numbers in honour of the Majors past greats.

The other jersey also retired during the Memorial Cup was Red Kelly's number 3, which was last worn by defenceman Matt Russo in the 2008-09 season. Dave Keon's number 9 jersey was retired December 14th, 2008 and was last worn by defenceman Tim Billingsley in 2007-08.

Wise will now wear the number 18, while Percy dons the number 28, worn last season by mid-season acquisition Chris DeSousa, and prior to that, defenceman Cameron Gaunce.

While the jersey numbers are new, the goal remains the same; to bring a championship back to the Majors storied franchise.

"M" is for Mississauga. "M" is for Majors. And "M" is also for the Memories made during a player's years with the club - no matter what number he wears on his back.
